A great read when you're in need of confirmation...as he might have said, life as an adventure, not a career. All of his books were quite different, when you look at them. Like each one was an experiment in itself. Plexus is probably where he got the balance just right. I think Josh about captures the power of Colossus with these words. For me, this book seemed to mark a turn in Miller's voice away from the angry force of his earlier work, to the more assured and, yes, self-confident tone of his later work/monologue. That said, I remember reading Capricorn during one of my failed efforts at holding down a "real" job -- pretty much blew the roof off that illusion! And recently, while visiting a friend in Chicago (yet another struggling writer), I re-read Quiet Days in Clichy. What a nice companion piece to Cancer, albeit a bit rougher and less polished. But I must confess, I've always loved to dip into Black Spring, an impulse that's yet to let me down. An earlier work, to be sure -- but with Black Spring, Miller "became" a poet! I don't really like the "Tropic" books. In "The Rosy Crucifixion" he sometimes writes along the lines that the "purpose" of his life was to write these books, and I think that shows in their breadth, depth and especially their unpretentiousness; the sense of purpose in them is clear.
